real-estateBuying a property can be considered as a good investment here in Sri Lanka and it has a higher tendency to give a better return than other investments. As an agent, you benefit from all the sales and rent of all the properties you deal with. Becoming a successful real estate agent is not an easy task since it requires lot of commitment, education, knowledge and your research skills.


Due to lack of legal requirements to register as an estate agent here in Sri Lanka, it simply allows anybody to become a real estate agent or a broker. The adverse side of this is that it let a lot of non- professionals to enter the market thus decreasing the quality of the trade.


Here are some tips and skills to assist you to become a better real estate agent and to improve the quality of the service provided.


1 Is this your only source of income


If you consider yourself a real estate agent, it cannot be considered as a part time job. Because you always have to be ready to show a house to a client at a time he or she prefers, to meet sellers and to properly market a property. If you are unable to provide a full dedicated service it will only bring the quality of your service down.


2 Good communication skills


A good broker must at all times carefully listen to the client in order to understand what he or she exactly want. As an agent we must be able to communicate all the details pertaining to the property like details of the market, neighborhood, Land, Price and so on without hiding out any details from the customer.


3 Been a people person


This is the main skill needed as an agent. An agent must be able to associate with anyone or a group with ease. It is necessary for you to become a likable person and to create a positive personal connection with the clients since it lead to building trust and trust will lead to a sale.


4 Marketing


This is a key aspect as well. In the modern society there is plenty of ways to spread the word to the society especially through internet and social media. Simple ways been creating and managing a page in social media like Facebook and maintaining an attractive proper website will be key factors to attract more sales and to get more clients. Higher the number of clients higher the chance for a high income.


5 Dedication


As an agent you have to be dedicated to your profession in order to succeed. You have to make sure to follow every lead you get from a client till it closes down. This will build trust between the client and the agent which would have a higher potential to lead to a sale.


6 Desire to succeed


Since Real estate is a new fast moving industry here in Sri Lanka, especially in areas like Colombo, KandyGampaha and areas around Colombo with so many apartments and houses for sale and rent, many firms and Individuals do enter into the market. So you need to poses that desire and vision needed to succeed in the industry and should always aim and plan for the long run. Initially you might end up with a handful of clients, but It’s important not to back down, but to close those leads properly and it will lead to more clients and once you capture the market as a top real estate agent, clients will simply start to flow through.
