Live Classy, with the right touch! – Latest Interior Decorating Trends

https://www.mylankaproperty.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Interior-Design-Cool-Image-1024x640.jpg

Interior designing is taught to us by our ancestors, however much thought was given to it from the 17 th century onwards. In the present day, most Interior designers prefer to bring back styles from the past and incorporate it to the existing patterns, it is crucial that the designer gets this right! It is an all-inclusive package; the pattern, colours, the texture and also the space available has a huge role to play.

Few aspects that designers take in to consideration are how to be environmentally friendly, how to make the most of each piece – making sure it has a multipurpose, and ensuring that the space you create gives you complete relaxation and peace. All these aspects considered, here are some of the ongoing trends presented to the drawing board –

-Black stainless steel
KitchenGone are the days where people used to have pastel ovens and polished stainless steel ovens, the newest trend is to have a sleek black stainless steel oven that will redecorate your entire kitchen and have that complete clean look.

-Prints are back!

If you have watched the, “That 70’s Show” – the interior on the set and the floral prints on the couch are back in business. This era has always been an influence to the fashion industry and now for interior designing; its free-spirited nature has inspired many designers and they have brought back polished metals, bold geometric patterns, walnut colours with funky lantern shapes in avocado green, grey and bright orange. download

-Charging stations been integrated to furniture

Most people use their living space to chill and do what they please; write e-mails or documents, watch a movie or play a game on the tab, chat with friends over the phone, relax and journal on an electronic device…etc., this requires power banks. Therefore, many designers incorporate same in to the living space.

-Office space to induce wellness and productivity

The basic colours to be; nickel, gold, black, black brass or white and the use of leather upholstery. By offering an assortment of materials to work around most designers’ make-do with what they have and incorporate their own style to personalize it and to make it look inspiring.

-Customize and personalize

There are many online organizations that allow customers to come up with their own designs to suit their living space. They offer them a variety of textures, colours, fabrics, and configurations. Along with this they also have an option for the customer to select a preferred shape!

Many designers make a few mistakes and these are a few to watch out for;

-Forget about lighting; depending on the place, lighting can be tricky – but if it’s a small open space, using mirrors in the room can balance this issue.

-Pictures need to be at the right height, at eye level. It’s advisable to have a mock painting put up before hammering the nails in.

-Pillow problems; never have too many pillows to cover the entire sofa.

-Be easy with the colour scheming; always go with colours that suit your surroundings and a style that is pleasant.

-Get rid of the clutter; ornaments, paintings and furniture that does not go with the overall outlook of the living space.

Giving destinations its identity through buildings and structures – Modern Architecture

https://www.mylankaproperty.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/modernarchi-1024x724.jpg

People like to feel important by living or working in a cool looking place. This is where Modern Architecture plays its part because it caters to a variety of styles and designs, and has something for everyone. Even if an individual would prefer a rustic and country look, it can always be incorporated since there are modern designs similar that would appeal to them.

Modern-Architecture-12A style of a building gives it an identity, gives it character and becomes an icon and a landmark; Modern Architecture gives a building just that! The basic fundamentals of this form of architecture is to keep it clean and simple by keeping and emphasizing the actual structure of the building and its materials. This is the main reason why most structures and buildings designed this way predominantly feature elements of wood, steel and glass.

The definition of Modern Architecture in the “design world” can be mistaken by assuming that there is Contemporary designs included; this is both true and false because Contemporary designs mean this moment, the “now”. Whereas Modern refers to the developments in technology and engineering from the 20 th century onwards.

After World War I had come to an end, most western countries adapted to this architectural style; as mentioned before the basic rational was to use modern material, the principles of functionalist planning, and the rejection of historical precedent.fallingwaterflickr

Modern designs happen to carry an “anything but boring” look. Leaving its flat roofs and boxy styles aside, the

structure or building always stands out and is unique. There are many buildings created by iconic architects around the world that would support this statement; Falling water, the Usonian Houses and the Broadacre City by Frank Lincoln Wright, City of Wine Complex in the Northern part of Spain by Frank Grehry, Le Grand Louvre in Paris by I. M Pei, The Crystal Cathedral by Philip Johnson and many more.

Between the years 2000-2010 Sri Lanka experienced the presence of post modernism

z_p06-Sri-Lanka-on-right-01where creating monumental structures was incorporated in architecture. Designed by Kahawita De Silva and Associates, The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapakse Theatre in Colombo is the perfect example. Also currently under construction is the Colombo Lotus Tower which will also soon be an iconic building in the Commercial Capital.

Apart from keeping it simple and clean, and focussing on materials, in conclusion Modern Architecture is very tasteful if done right. When the designing takes place, the following should be adhered to;

– Get inspired by functions; land, water, rocks…etc.

– Leave nothing to hide

– Love all things that are linear

– Have bold roof lines

– Use windows as a design element

– Have creative floor plans

– Post and beam architecture

– Revamped outdoor space

Attracting a Good Life with Feng Shui

https://www.mylankaproperty.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/feng-shui-mylankaproperty.png

feng-shui-mylankaproperty

When designing a house or work place, deciding the overall plan, choosing interior and furniture, a lot of thought is put in to the process when a person has the motive of attracting positive energy, and vibes. This enables them to practice healthy living standards. Feng Shui is simply a spatial arrangement and orientation in line with the flow of energy also known as “Chi”. Elements that are “Feng Shui friendly” are considered in line with how people connect with their surroundings as this is an art and science of creating harmonious environments.

The main objective of Feng Shui is to create positive changes in to the general living and working environments for it to support an individual better, rather than it turning in to an inconvenience or creating negative energy.  The basic core of Feng Shui is     seeking a balance between Yin and Yang; the interconnection and continuous change in the process of nature, Qi; a complex natural force generated by real and abstract sources like sunlight, colour vibrations, movement… etc., and the five elements; water, wood, fire, earth and metal, and there after Man and nature itself. The name Feng Shui has its own meaning where Feng means wind and Shui means water. Taking all this in to consideration the physical landscape is designed, space is allocated strategically, and all elements are placed in an appropriate place at an auspicious time.

feng-shui-mylankaproperty-001Feng Shui does not guarantee better health, wealth and happiness, it is merely a form of creating a better living and working environment which can inevitably be a positive way of living and dealing with situations and other obstacles better.

Chi works in mysterious ways! One might feel a sense of tiredness, lack of focus or even feel discouraged when the flow of Chi is weak or blocked. Or one might feel out of control, overly emotional, or anxious most of the time if Chi flows too strongly. By analysing the entire layout and décor of a home Feng Shui is able to diagnose problems and enable possible solutions. In order to adjust the energy of the place; shape, colour, texture, sound, light, imagery, and the arrangement of furniture can be used. Thus gives a person an attractive, safe and nurturing space to live in comfort while achieving their goals and finding financial prosperity.

The place we tend to spend time the most is our bedroom – here are some healthy tips to arrange your room the best way where balance of Chi flows positively;

      1. Draw a square and imagine that it is your room, with the lower line representing the entrance.

      2. Divide the square equally to nine squares; three rows of three squares each.Start from the lowest row of squares – the area you first walk in to the room. The left corner of the room is the area of Knowledge, the center square of that same row relates to Career and the right hand square is Helpful People/Travel.

      3. One could use the following to arrange;

        Knowledge – Bookcase, Books, Self-Development tools…etc.

        Career – Mirrors and water related items

        Helpful People/Travel – Pictures of the ones who have helped youThen look at the central row of squares; starting from the left square, it relates to Family/Health, the central square is the center and the right hand square represents Creativity/ Children.

      4. One could use the following to arrange;

        Family/Health – Family photos and plants

        Creativity/Children – Artwork or computerFinally, taking the last row of squares in to consideration; the left square represents Wealth, the square in the center represents Fame/Reputation and the right hand square represents Relationships/Romance.

      5. One could use the following to arrange;

        Wealth – Money, Jewellery, fish, anything red, purple or gold

        Fame/Reputation – Candles or Awards

        Relationships/ Romance – Paired objects, pictures of loved ones or anything pink

Feng Shui is brought to the world by the Chinese, and a similar method of attracting positive energy through arranging your space appropriately is through Vaastu, meaning “a place of dwelling” was introduced by the early Indian civilization.

Both methods however, has one common cause – to ensure that a healthy life is lead in peace and prosperity.

Sri Lanka Profits from Trade with India

https://www.mylankaproperty.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/india-sri-lanka2.jpg

india-sri-lanka2

The Free Trade Agreement between India and Sri Lanka- ISFTA  has been in function since 2000. This has allowed Sri Lanka to export over 4000 items to India, duty free.

The results have been favourable to Sri Lanka since the agreement was enabled. The average exports to India  before 2000 was around $39m, since then there has been a rapid growth, according to the Sri Lanka Export Development Board average exports in 2005 and 2014 were $559m and $625m respectively.

Bilateral Trade, meanwhile, hit $4.6bn in 2014, up 23% year-on-year.

Even Though,  the trade balance has expanded in India’s favour, only a small portions of good entering Sri Lanka market falls under ISFTA. 13% of goods were imported from India in 2013, compared to 65% of Sri Lankan exports to India, proposing overall changes in the trade balance are largely due to external factors separate from ISFTA itself.

Both nations have worked to improve the ISFTA into a comprehensive economic partnership agreement. However there are concerns such as inclusion services in trade, many people think that this will cause job deprivation in fields like ICT.

New Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) which was introduced in 2016 with strong support from Sri Lanka’s private sector and strengthened by the main private sector advocacy group, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has created a new force.

The main aim of ETCA is to promote the partnership in technical area, scientific expertise and research among institutions, to improve the quality of goods and services and to open  the door for human resource development training.

According to Mr. Samantha Ranatunga, chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce “We have been doing business with India for over 2500 years,” . He also added “With that in mind, there is simply no way we can keep India out of our economic equation. Broadly speaking, a practical approach must be employed. We cannot let overt nationalism blind us to the realities.”

Lankans Protest the Port City Project

port-city-mylankaproperty

A  protest against the China funded port city project was held on 3rd of April 2016 , participants included priests, environmental activists and fisherman. They demanded the government halt a $1.5 bn Chinese funded project.

The city is planned to built on reclaimed land off Sri Lanka’s west coast. The port city will be comprised of golf course, marinas, apartments, hotels and malls. About 500 people participated in the protest that was in Colombo, shouting taglines and displaying boards reading, “Port city will destroy the whole country,” “Don’t disturb our fishing”, “Stop port city”  and “Save our nature.”

According to Catholic priest, Sarath Iddamalgoda, a member of the People’s Movement Against Port City, the project would not support nor benefit ordinary citizens and would make a huge impact on the country’s marine resources and the livelihood of fishermen and urged the government to stop this immediately.

The project was initiated in 2014 by Chinese President Xi Jinping during the time of former president Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa. The project was suspended after Mr. Rajapaksa lost the election in January 2015, the reason was the new government wanted  time to review the project to make sure that it satisfied all the required standards and free from corruption.

The government allowed to proceed with the project, as an effort to reassure China. Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe visited china at  the beginning of this month.
