If you live in an apartment in Colombo for rent or even if you have bought it for yourself, you might want to add in your own touch to it. Even if it is a luxury apartment, there is that one room that looks too small for your liking, and maybe you are not sure what to do with it. Here are some tips to make your room look appealing and spacious;


1. Wallpaper magic


Wallpaper does wonders if you can decorate your entire ceiling with it. A light coloured design will make the room look taller, and brighter. The trick here is to ensure that the eye is always drawn to the ceiling because anything that attracts attention upwards makes the space look larger.


2. Have an airy looking room


Dark colours will absorb light instead of reflecting it; using dark coloured furniture is advisable. However, ensure that the walls and floor are of a light colour to ensure the place looks airy, bright and big!


3. Breathing space


Always leave a couple of inches between the wall and the furniture in order to create that illusion of spaciousness. When leaning a sofa against a wall, the already cramped up looking room has an even more cramped up look. The tip here is to create a small desk or stool to keep against the wall and the piece of furniture on the opposite side.


4. Multipurpose stuff


Always look to buy furniture with a multipurpose. A coffee table with a built in shelf, beds with built-in shelves, or chairs that can be opened up for storage.


5. Closer to the ceiling


In order to draw the eye towards the ceiling, build shelves closer to the ceiling to store books and other items you can arrange vertically.


6. Decorate big


Having fewer, bigger items always is better. If you are in to decorating your apartment with pots and vases, ensure that they have a cantaloupe like shape as it looks full and catches attention. Always remember that we are placing objects to divert the eye from noticing that the room is small.


7. Decrease the clutter look


It looks grander to have one, big piece of furniture than to have multiple ones. It will make the living space look bigger and also the area will not look cluttered. Make a statement by investing on a great piece to have a classy effect.


Always have a piece of furniture or decoration that has stripes to elongate the space. It can be a rug, a painting or even the design on the bed or couch. Place it where there is more length in the room for the longest optimal effect.


9. Say no to overhead lights


Use fewer and smaller lamps to only light up certain sections of the space. Having an overhead light for the whole room will only show the size of the room. Whereas this method directs the eye only to where the light is.


10. Break the rules


Build your own space; a living room doesn’t necessarily have to have a sofa and a TV. Customize it and make it your own, make it fun and make it wild.
