In recent times Sri Lanka more specifically in Colombo, since it is one of the main metropolitan cities, have become much more modernised in the way we live our daily lives comparatively to about 20 or 30 years back. At the same time, the places we dwell also have been up to that modern lifestyle. Accommodations these days have an aura of fresh new designs and fittings. People these days are concerned about being Eco or more aware of environment so there are ways that the owners are reducing such unnecessary wastage. Apartments to be more particular, on short-term or long-term rental, have been more into the whole non traditional and contemporary designs.

Even Bathrooms where we do our private businesses-seems like there is no way to make that area of our apartments look any more cooler but surprisingly its possible-have new chic and well designed trends that make them very eye-catching.

The floor and tiling of the bathrooms also depend on the designer choice with different types of textural tiles and different types of colours patterns that are suitable for the tenant’s visual satisfaction. Now there are tiles that are used to prevent people from slipping and falling in the bathroom due to the soap or water.

Lighting is very important when you are in there doing your business-you need it to be bright enough to see everything you’re doing clearly right?-, nowadays bathrooms are fixed with bright LED light bulbs to reduce electricity wastages. There are also different type of light fixtures and fittings that are used like spotlights or the lamps that are fixed right above the mirror.

If you’re taking a shower back in the day, your shower head would look circular or oval but nowadays there are different shower heads like square shower heads, they are pretty useful because it gives a broader space for the person who is taking a bath-this means more dancing and performing, like you are doing a concert, in the shower space-and this can cut down on water wastage, also there are multiple shower heads fitted into a shower cubicle. Some shower cubicles have a sauna system built into it-now you can feel like you’re at your very own spa-with remote control access.

Sinks have two components; a washbowl and a tap. Let’s start with the tap, well there are different types of taps like the touch sensitive ones-you have to know some sort of martial arts to learn how to open the tap to let the water come out-which prevents water wastage. Another type of tap and very common in most apartments is the disk tap-or what I would call ‘lift the lever’ tap-that is pretty straight-forward and easy to use. Also a widely familiar one is the compression washer taps. Moving on, the types of washbowls are actually very innovative and stylish with see-through bowls and different types of shapes. Some have 2 sinks for his/her purposes.

Now getting down to the main business; modern day bathrooms, there are different types of shapes including the different systems of bidet like the original porcelain-the separate little tub on the side of the toilet so you can wash yourself awkwardly-or the typical spraying bidet that rests on the side of the toilet.

To conclude this run-through of the various trends that seen in apartments recently or typically, bathrooms will always be used how it is intended to be used no matter how the appearance seems to be.
